Friday, April 26th
Homework over the weekend:
It's really important that you are working on your IOP's over the weekend, especially if you are presenting next week. Please email me any questions you have!
We have now checked out "Joy Luck Club" and will begin reading it this weekend. Before you begin reading, you need to do some research on the following terms (don't get too stressed, I literally mean a google search) Please write down the following terms and write down a few pieces of information you find out about each in your journal.
1) Amy Tan (give a brief history of her life, including her cultural background)
2) Chinese immigration to the US, particularly the immigration around 1910. What were some reasons for the immigration?
3) Mah Jong (give a brief history of the game, its rule and cultural significance)
4) Dialects (Talk about the different Chinese dialects: Mandarin, Cantonese, Wu. What are the differences? What are the similarities? What might make it difficult for a speaker of one of these dialects to become fluent in English?)
5) Feng Shui and Confucius (You do both. What is feng shui and what about the cultural significance? Give a brief history of the life of Confucius)
6) Yin Yang (cultural significance, origins, importance in Ancient China, importance in modern China)
7) Chinese Family Relationships (What is the Chinese kinship system? What are cultural expectations for the mother/daughter relationship? What are cultural expectations for spouses?):
You need to read the first story "The Joy Luck Club" by Jing-Mei Woo and
do a guided journal on the reading. For those of you absent on Friday who did not
receive the journal assignment, please write a personal reaction to the assigned reading
by writing 150 words. Please include one direct quotation and explain it. You can admit your confusion during any part of the reading, expand on the author's ideas, and attempt to
discover your own ides. Please complete this in a journal.
Have a good weekend, get some rest and enjoy the sunshine if it stays ;)

Began literature circles round 4, period 1 will finish BTBF and LOP for Wednesday, period 2 will finish TCP and BTBF for Wednesday
Be sure to pick up the essay "Mother Tongue" by Amy Tan and answer the questions for Wednesday's class as well as read the free write and prepare a response to the article. Look up any unknown words for upcoming class discussion.

April 5th!
Homework:
You received the poem "Poetry" by Marianne Moore on Friday. Please read through the poem at least once, and respond to the following questions on notebook paper for Monday's class:
1) What is the tone of this piece? How do you claim to know?
2) What is different stylistically with this poem than with others we have studied? What techniques stand out to you in terms of style and structure?
3)“I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”
-Albert Einstein
This quote by Albert Einstein speaks to the gift of imagination. Do you agree with his statement? How so? How does this quote relate to the poem "Poetry"?
Please have these responses completed by Monday's class. Also, be ready for literature circle round 3 beginning on Wednesday. I introduced the extra credit option on Friday as well, which is the option to either choose to view a documentary of any kind and do a one-page write-up on it, or listen to any radio program on NPR and do a one-page write-up on it. All responses must be turned to me by this Thursday and must be typed and double spaced. There are great documentaries listed online, and NPR.org is the website for the radio programs.
Be thinking about your IOP! I will be introducing the proposal form on Thursday of this next week, as well you will take your grammar quiz for the quarter this Thursday as well! Lots to remember, lots to cover, lots 'o fun! ;)

April 3rd-it's been awhile...;)
Welcome back to blogging!
It has been awhile since our last post, but never fear, I'm back and giving you an assignment!
Class:
For class, we began looking at the poem "Phenomenal Woman" by Maya Angelou. I would like you to consider the literary elements present within this poem and make some comparisons with "Still I Rise".
Questions to answer on your own blog:
1) How does "Phenomenal Woman" not subscribe/substantiate the perfectionism for females lauded in society?
2) The repetition is apparent with each stanza. How does Angelou create self-assurance in both "Still I Rise" and Phenomenal Woman"?
3) What would you say the crux/main focus of this poem is? Why?
4) Charisma, charm and self-confidence cannot be shown or described to someone else. Even if it is somewhat determined, one person's allure doesn't fit another. What literary techniques do you see contributing to a certain theme of individuality?
